1.2 A Technology Perspective
We believe that technological perspective is very important. It provides insight into ”how technology works” and informs a constructively critical view of technology which avoids alienation from our technologically- based society. It enables consideration of how technology might be used to provide products and systems that help create the sort of society in which learners wish to live. How can we teach technological perspective? Perhaps reading is the answer. Learners’ opportunities to read extended texts in D&T are often limited by the inevitable and justifiable focus on practical activity but there are areas of the subject which are perhaps best addressed through reading and discussing what has been read. We think there is a strong case to be made for using reading with peer- peer and class discussion as a means of developing learners’ technological perspective.
Technological Perspective Readers:
Are based on news items that are readily available from, for example, the BBC News website.
The text is extracted from the site and interaction with the text is enabled through the following colour coded ‘call outs’.
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
This helps learners to think about what they have just read so that the following text will be easier to understand. There is no need for them to write a response. Such pauses for thought might also encourage interest, concern or scepticism.
